Upon getting the news that he was terminally ill, Grant said "I've had a charmed life". Grant's childhood was filled with baseball, hockey, swimming, and golf. He graduated from North Hollywood High School, where many of his friends and classmates were child actors in TV shows such as Leave it to Beaver, Dennis the Menace, My Three Sons, and Lassie.

Grant and his hockey team got to appear in a national TV commercial with Tony the Tiger for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. Through his father's golf club and the shoe stores his grandfather owned in Beverly Hills and Hollywood, and through Grant's own golf career, he had a wealth of encounters with celebrities. He loved to tell the many stories of his personal experiences with people such as Bob Hope, Gene Autry, Mac Davis, Joe Torre, Bear Bryant, Tom Selleck, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus just to name a few.

Grant was a gifted athlete excelling in ice hockey and golf. His Ice Hockey team won the West Coast Championship several times, and he turned his golf ability into a life long career. He began as an assistant golf pro working at country clubs and resorts in New York, Minnesota, and Florida. His experiences with the family's shoe business made a natural transition for Grant to have a long career in the golf shoe and apparel industry. His work included design, sales, and public relations for several golf related companies. A highlight was when Grant worked for Jack Nicklaus at MacGregor Golf Company. His travels and contacts allowed him to play at hundreds of the best golf courses in the country from Hawaii to Florida, and Texas to New York. He had a phenomenal recall of every course and every hole.

As fate would have it, in April 1979 Grant was representing Johnston and Murphy shoe company, and Karen was representing Eastern Airlines at a celebrity golf tournament in Montgomery, Alabama. They met, fell in love, and married six months later. They celebrated their 35th anniversary just last month. The first eleven years of their married life Grant and Karen lived in Nashville, Dallas, Atlanta, Greenville, South Carolina, San Francisco, and back to Atlanta. They moved to Plano twenty four years ago.
Grant had a soft spot in his heart for animals, and Karen's passion for cocker spaniels created the opportunity for Grant to provide lots of loving care. Their animal eye specialist once nominated Grant and Karen for the national honor of "Pet Owner of the Year". They dearly loved their dogs, and Grant was a great dog dad.

Grant loved to keep in touch with his many friends and family from all over the country. He felt so close to his hockey teammates from his youth that he personally organized a reunion in Southern California.

Grant is survived by his wife Karen Wooten Goodwin of Plano; his sister-in-law Jana Wooten Amos and her husband Danny of Plano; niece Emily Hudson and husband Joseph of Tyler; nephew Neil Amos and wife Jennette of Arlington. Also surviving are his Uncle James Goodwin of Tucson, Arizona; his Aunt Leigh Nash of Georgetown, Texas; along with several cousins.
