For seventeen seasons (1957 to 1958 and 1959 to 1975), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars. His lengthy association with the sport began with the Hamilton Tiger Cubs of the Ontario Hockey Association during the 1954-1955 season. During the course of his NHL career, he reached or surpassed the 20-goal mark five-times and achieved all-star status five-times (1963 to 1965 and 1967 to 1968). In 1,127 regular season games, he compiled 274 goals, with 454 assists. After retiring as a player, he served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota North Stars and was their head coach for part of the 1982-1983 season. He died from a heart attack.
