Janet Van Haaften

December 23, 1917 - July 15 , 2005

Janet Wassink Van Haaften, daughter of John and Cornelia Vande Kieft Wassink, was born December 23, 1917, in Holland, Michigan. She passed away on Friday, July 15, 2005, at Jefferson Place in Pella, Iowa, at the age of eighty-seven years, six months, and twenty-two days.

When Janet was three months old, her family traveled by train for their move to a farm near Tracy, Iowa, where her grandfather, Reijer Vande Kieft, was the pastor. She received her education at the Bussey Consolidated School, completing the eighth grade. Twenty-five years later, her family moved to a farm near Otley.

On May 12, 1948, Janet was united in marriage with Henry Van Haaften, and they made their home in Pella. To this union six children were born: Janice, David, John, Calvin, Cheri, and Kevin. Her family was a very precious part of her life, and her family loved her dearly. Her faith was part of every aspect of her life, and was evident to all who knew her.

In 1951, Janet and Henry started Van Haaften Plumbing and Heating, where she was the bookkeeper. She enjoyed reading and writing poetry, and many of her poems have been published. Her love of God's creation led Janet to a lifetime enjoyment of collecting rocks and fossils, which grew to an extensive collection that many school and college classes have visited.

Janet is survived by her six children and their spouses: Janice and Larry Van Weelden of Pella, John and Jane Van Haaften of Pella, David and Dorothy Van Haaften, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Calvin and Mary Van Haaften of Pella, Cheri and Ronald Van Wyngarden of Pella, and Kevin and Amy Van Haaften of Pella; seventeen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Van Zee of Pella; her sister-in-law, Gertrude Wassink of Pella; Henry's sister and husband, Mary and Frank Johnson, Peru, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her mother (1968) and father (1979); her husband Henry, who passed away on July 21, 1992; two sisters, Fanny Wassink (1941) and Rose Van Essen (2004); one brother, Henry Wassink (2001); two brothers-in-law, Alvin G. Van Zee (2000) and Clarence Van Essen (1970).

Burial will take place at the Graceland Cemetery in Pella.
