RACHEL ANNIE BROOKS was born in Camden, Mississippi on September 12, 1927 to Precious Westbrook Palmer and Lee Scott. She was the only child born to that union. She was raised by her grandmother and aunt and inherited brothers, Ceal Stephen, Sr. (deceased), William James, and Bishop Stephen Biddle and sisters Carrie Bell Pigram (deceased), Claudine Townsend, and Barbara Travis (deceased).
Rachel was united in Holy Matrimony in 1945 to the late Thomas Jeff (T.J.) Brooks. She would often tell her children that, while growing up, she was lonely as the only child. Thus, she did not want any of her children to be lonely. She then felt as if it was her duty as a mother to have twelve children. To this union, the following children were born: Elizabeth Jean, Tom Lee, Dessie Ree, Willie Earl, Wesley James (Angela), Erma Lee (Paul), Clementine “Penny”, Edward Charles, Gloria Jean, Bernard, Geraldine and Annie. She loved “ALL” her children.
Rachel retired from Springfield School District #186 as an Environmental Service Specialist, where she was a loyal employee. She also worked in the health care industry for many years. In order for her to help provide financial support for her family, Rachel worked as a domestic employee for many prominent families in Springfield. If anyone was hungry, she made sure that they were fed, including the neighborhood cats.
Rachel accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church until her health started to fail. She served as the President of the Mother Board, member of Sunday school, Overall Missionary, Progressive Circle, Eastside Senior Citizen, and AARP. Since residing in Springfield, IL, she was also a previous member of Holy City Missionary Baptist Church.
On November 21, 2014, Rachel was called home to be with the Lord and to be with her mother Precious, husband T.J. and her sons Willie and Wesley, who preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories and love her forever, ALL OF HER CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. Her grandchildren, she leaves Kenny, Tyrone, Lisa, Sondra (Bryant), Michael, Tom Jr. (Jessica), Patricia (Shawn), Tia, Christopher, Shynele, Jonathan, Brian, Nicholas, Anthony, Courtney, Ashley, Aaron, LaTisha, Brittanae, Imani, Joshua, Fletcher Jr. and Isaiah, a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and special friends, Annie Stevenson, William Earl (Bo Jim) Newman, and Anthony Sims.
