Longtime Sandwich resident Michael Sykes, age 74, died Friday, November 21, 2014 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth.

He was born Michael Parks Sykes on March 13, 1940 in Enfield, NC, the son of John Collins and Mary Maddry (Parks) Sykes.

Michael attended and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1960. He went on to East Carolina University where he graduated with a BS degree in Mathematics in 1964.

On February 12, 1965, Michael was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Stout in the Presbyterian Church in Rapids City SD. To this union two children were born, Michael and Suzanne.

Michael served his country in the United States Air Force from November 10, 1964 to October 31, 1984 where he served as a Space Systems Officer. He was a math teacher at Riverview School in East Sandwich.

Hobbies he enjoyed were woodcarving, photography and traveling. He was a former member of the Clinton-DeWitt Masonic Lodge in Sandwich and enjoyed the time spent each Friday with his breakfast buddies in Sandwich. He served as treasurer of the Canterbury Neighborhood Association for over 20 years and volunteered at the Osterville Methodist Church with the Lend-A-Hand group. He was known by many as "Mr Fix-it".

Preceding Michael in death were his parents.

Surviving family members are his loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy, his children Michael Sykes, II and his wife Bridget Barnhart of Wilmington, NC and Suzanne Sykes Woodbury and her husband Jon D. Woodbury of Sandwich. Also surviving are four grandchildren Michael P. Sykes III, Samantha M. Sykes, Hunter D. Woodbury and Cole D. Woodbury. He is also survived by his brother John C. Sykes Jr. and his wife Priscilla.

A memorial service will be Monday November 24, at 1:00 PM, at the Osterville Methodist Church, Rev John Holt officiating. Inurnment will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

A memorial fund is being established in his memory at the Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center, 275 Sandwich St., Plymouth, MA 02360
