BUNNELL, Fla. Raymond C. Gates, Sr., 73, of Bunnell, FL passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at his home after losing his battle to cancer under the care of Florida Hospital HospiceCare.

Ray was born July 12, 1938 in Fallen Timber, PA to Robert Gates and Clarabelle Glass.




In 1956 he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country for 20 years; Ray was also a Vietnam Veteran. After he retired from the Navy, Portsmouth, RI became his home for 30 plus years. After the passing of his second wife Carole S. Gates he moved to Bunnell, FL to be closer to his children.

He is preceded in death by his second wife Carole S. Gates, stepson Stephen Drapeau, twin brother Robert (Bob) Gates, sister Virginia, sister Ellen (Cookie) Gates and both of his parents.

He is survived by his daughter Mary Ellen Stevens, son-in-law Jake Stevens of Bunnell, son Raymond Gates, Jr. of Bunnell, son David Gates, daughter-in-law Jessica Gates of Middleberg, FL, his stepson Jason Drapeau of Cranston, RI, stepson Mark Drapeau of Warren, RI, 17 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren.

Ray was the Commander of District 2 VFW; he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and playing the slots in Biloxi and had a witty sense of humor.

He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed.

Ray will be laid to rest next to his wife Carole on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Newport Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Florida Hospital Hospice Care at 770 W. Granada Boulevard, Suite 304, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
