Marquis (Marcus) de Lafayette House was born July 4, 1825 in Tennessee, probably Hardeman or Haywood County. The names of his parents are unknown and research continues. He married in mid 1840's to Elizabeth Frances Terry and had one daughter before moving to Mississippi. M.D.L. mustered Aug 7, 1861 as 2nd Lt in with the 8th Mississippi at Rushing's store. He was promoted to Capt on May 6th 1862. Severely wounded in the hip Dec 31, 1862 at the Battle of Murfreesboro. He never fully recovered, but continued to serve until he realized he could no longer command to the best of his ability. He sent a letter of resignation Aug 10, 1864 for relief of his command and it was accepted. Shortly after the War the family along with others traveled to Texas. Capt and his family settled along the Navasota river near Springfield where he operated a ferry across the river. He contracted pneumonia and died at an early age of 50, March 4, 1876. Being he was born on July 4th, his descendants mostly who was born in Limestone and Leon counties has a family reunion in his honor and the "Country's" on the 4th of July every year. The House family leaves a legacy of faith, family and Country with many becoming Methodist ministers and continue through 4 generations. See more of his children on bio of his wife E. F.
