EVALINE GOINS MCCRAY was the daughter of Albert Goins (1815-Unknown), a "free colored person", and Dianah Dickerson Goins (1818-Unknown), a slave. As a result of her mother's slave status, Evaline too was considered a slave, and was at first the property of a father/son duo named Isaac Garrison (abt. 1771-1860), and David Garrison (1797-1887) of Grayson County, Virginia, and then later Isaac Garrison's son-in-law, Benjamin Shupe (1802-1888).1 She married James E. McCray on Dec. 23, 1869 in Grayson County, Virginia.
