Herbert Marshall Hennington, Sr., age 90 died peacefully in Houston, Texas on November 8, 2014.
Herb was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi on July 21, 1924 to Katie McGinnis Hennington and M.F. Hennington.
Herb grew up on a farm and he loved to tell the story about how he earned the money to buy his first bicycle by growing and selling tomatoes. He had fond memories of learning to hunt in the woods of Mississippi with his grandfather. He first attended school in a one-room schoolhouse where he graduated as valedictorian. He then attended Copiah Lincoln Junior College in Wesson, Mississippi from 1942-1943. While in the Navy during World War II, he studied pre-med from 1943-1944 at the University of Southern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana. He graduated with a B.S. and M.D. degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1947. After interning at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas he began private practice as a General Practitioner in Beaumont, Texas in July of 1948 at the age of 24.
While in medical school in Little Rock, Arkansas, he met Jaunice (Jean) Burford. They were married in Dallas, Texas on May 8, 1948. During the Korean War, he served as a flight surgeon in the U. S. Air Force from 1951-1953. After the Korean War, he returned to Beaumont to resume his medical practice until his retirement in 1990. In 1972, the American Board of Family Practice certified him as a Family Physician. He was active in several professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Occupational Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Southern Medical Association. He served as Past Vice President of the Jefferson County Medical Society, Past President of the Beaumont Academy of Medicine, and Past President of Baptist Hospital.
Herb, a man of unwavering integrity, was greatly loved and respected by his family, friends and patients. He was a strong believer in God, the Bible, church and prayer. Herb was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served as Board Chairman from 1961-1962.
He was honored as King of the Neches River Festival in 1982. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the El Mina Shrine, a member of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Beaumont Shrine Club.
As much as he valued hard work, he also enjoyed his time off. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and remained active playing golf, tennis and water-skiing into his seventies. He enjoyed traveling with Jean and close friends to Alaska, Spain, Central America and Switzerland.
Herb and Jean loved spending time with their children, their spouses and grandchildren, especially when everyone could be together at the lake house. For their 50th wedding anniversary they took the entire family to Disney World and this past spring Herb and Jean were able to attend the wedding of their granddaughter, Ashley, in Houston.
Herb is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Hennington, daughter, Bonnie Deaton and her husband, David, son, Marshall Hennington and daughter Kathy Hennington, grandchildren, Erin Deaton Moss and her husband Jeremy Moss, Ashley Deaton Golden and her husband, Evan Golden, Charlotte Hennington and John Hennington and great-granddaughter Allie Moss, sister, Mary Anna Beall, nephew, Lee Beall and his wife, Kay Beall and niece, Ann Kimbrough and her husband Wayne Kimbrough.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Katie Lou McGinnis Hennington and father, M.F. Hennington and by his daughter-in-law, Theresa Hebert (19599446).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison Avenue, Beaumont, Texas with a reception to follow.
