She was born on Oct. 19, 1929, in Moody, to Clifford and Edith (Goode) Eakin.
Opal grew up in Slaton, where she graduated high school. She attended Lubbock College Business School in Lubbock. She worked as a waitress while attending College. In fact she met the love of her life in the very cafe she waitressed at. Opal married Clarence Edward Deeds on Dec. 26, 1947, in Slaton. Together they were blessed with four wonderful children: two sons, Larry Bruce and Brent Clarence; and two daughters, Linda Joyce and Johna Gay. Opal and Clarence lived and worked on their ranch which was located in Cowboy Community near Mercury. They had been happily married for 49 wonderful years at the time of his passing on Nov. 12, 1996. Opal loved drawing, sewing, arts and crafts and playing her "Hawaiian" steel guitar. She was a very talented self-taught artist. She could free hand draw any and everything. She was a member of the Mercury Ladies Club and thoroughly enjoyed the time she was able to spend with all of her club friends. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Voca. Opal will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Edith Eakin; her husband, Clarence Edward Deeds; one brother, Curtis Eakin; and one sister, Katherine McCormick.
Survivors include: two sons, Larry Bruce Deeds of Joshua Tree, Calif. and Brent Clarence Deeds of Mercury; two daughters, Linda Joyce Deeds and Jerry Jolly of Brady, and Johna Deeds Evans and husband, Frankie, of Rochelle; one grandson, Jason Bryan Cook of Brady; one great-grandson, Edward Jason Cook of Brady; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
