From the Syracuse Herald Feb. 23, 1944 and the Syracuse Post Standard Sept. 19, 1948:

Second Lt. John J. Zulberti, who was killed in action in Italy in 1944, was buried with full military honors in St. Agnes cemetery on Sept. 20, 1948. Rites were conducted at the cemetery by the Geddes Post of the Veterans of WWII.

Second Lt. Zulberti was one of the most widely-known local athletes in the decade before the war, having played baseball and basketball at Solvay High School, and then as a short-stop with the Solvay Tigers of the Suburban League, helping that club in their championship run. He later played on several semi-pro clubs before entering the Canadian-American league. The John Zulberti Memorial Trophy was created in his honor. After he entered the Army, he first became a sergeant, then worked his way into Officers' Candidate School, earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant before being sent overseas.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Theresa Marie Capucilli Zulberti; by a son, John Zulberti Jr.; by a brother, Joseph Zulberti; and by a sister, Miss Mary Zulberti.
