Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod pastor at Mount Pleasant, Michigan from 1901 to 1905, then Saginaw, Michigan from 1905 to 1919 and finally Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1919 to 1948. He served as president of the LCMS's South Wisconsin District from 1921 to 1932 and vice-president of the LCMS from 1932 to 1947. From 1932 to 1951 he served as first chairman of the LCMS's Board of Higher Education.
