Mass of Christian Burial for Martha L. Speight, 93, of Porter, was celebrated Saturday, July 14, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, with Father Paul Schumacher as celebrant of the Mass.
Burial was in the Canby City Cemetery.
Sheila Gauvin was the reader, and the giftbearers were Martha's granddaughters and great-granddaughters. Bruce Melby sang "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and "Beyond the Sunset." The congregation sang "Here I am Lord," "On Eagles' Wings," and "How Great Thou Art." Phyllis Vlaminck was the organist. The honorary casketbearers were Martha's grandsons, and all of her friends. The active casketbearers were her grandsons: Paul, Brad, and Doug Olson, Terry Speight, and Scott Bresser, Corey, Jason, Brian Hoffman.
Mrs. Speight passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 11, at the Sioux Valley Canby Hospital in Canby.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1908, at Holloway to Robert and Christine Zinda. Martha and Arthur Speight were married on Nov. 5, 1934. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the C.C.W., and the Porter American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and canning her harvest. She also enjoyed family get-togethers, making her famous pies, and watching sports. She lived in the city of Porter for 67 years, in the house she and Arthur bought after their wedding.
She is survived by five children: Rose (Si) Olson of Porter, Robert (Velda) Speight of Farmington, Jerry (Neva) Speight of Lindstrom, Kathy (Robert) Hoffman of Porter, and Jean (Roger) Bresser of St. Louis Park; her sister, Ann Giles, age 99, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and her sister-in-law, Adeline Otto of Ivanhoe. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Paul (Bonnie) Olson, Brad (Laura) Olson, Douglas (Sherry) Olson, Laurie (Brad) Lease. Pam (Lynn) VanDeVeire, Tonya Speight, Sheila Gauvin, Tracy (Karen) Speight, Terry (Tracy) Speight, Christy (Pat) Lanoue, Corey (Holly) Hoffman, Jason Hoffman and friend, Brian Hoffman, Dawn (Scott) Stork, and Scott Bresser; and 24 great-grandchildren: Aaron, Ryan (Tawny), and Heather Olson, Jacob and Michael Olson, Jessica and Austin Olson, Brett and Derek Lease, Melisa, Jamey and Kari VanDeVeire, Tiffany and Angela Gauvin, Tyler, Laurin, Lindsy and Tori Speight, Marcus and Jacob Speight, Brandon, Amber and Jared Lanoue, and Ethan Stork.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one infant son; nine brothers; and two sisters.
