ODESSA A.J. Broadwell, 85, of Odessa, died Wednesday evening, December 3, 2008, at Hospice House in Odessa. He was born March 6, 1923, in Hamlin, Texas, to Hugh and Hattie Henson Broadwell. A.J. was reared and educated in Roscoe, Texas. Mr. Broadwell entered active duty in the U.S. Army in January 1943, after serving 2½ years in the National Guard. He was involved in 4 military campaigns. He was in the first wave of soldiers to hit the beaches on Normandy, France, as well as with the first U.S. soldiers to enter the city of Paris. He continued on with U.S. forces across Europe into Germany. His decorations include EAME Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal Distinguished Unit Badge with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Silver Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

He was discharged February 1946 and returned to the Roscoe/Sweetwater area. Mr. Broadwell became an ironworker and built bridges throughout the United States. The Broadwells moved to Odessa in 1958 and worked in the oil industry. A.J. later purchased B&H Mobile Home Park and owned and operated B&B Trailer Sales and was a mobile home dealer. He remained an active businessman until 2000. Mr. Broadwell was an active tennis player, participating in numerous tournaments; he was a member of the Odessa Racquet Club and played at Odessa College and UTPB, a sport he remained active in until 2003. He married Mary Cravy on January 21, 1950, in Mexico; she precedes him in death as well as 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Bishop of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Home 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2008.
