Edward Turner “Ed” Cheshire, who worked at Piedmont Trust Bank in Martinsville for 47 years and retired as a vice president there, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. He was 89.
Cheshire died at his home at 1604 Mulberry Road. He was born in Martinsville on Dec. 22, 1918, to Harry Bernard Cheshire and Bettie Morris Cheshire. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Cheshire; and three brothers, Harry B. Cheshire Jr., Dan Morris Cheshire and James William Cheshire.
He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1940 and served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945, where he became a staff sergeant with the 506th Fighter Group in the Western Pacific Theater.
He began his career at Piedmont Trust Bank in bookkeeping and later became a vice president.
He was a member of Broad Street Christian Church since 1932, where he was a deacon for many years and treasurer for 10 years.
He was president of Oakwood Cemetery for 26 years, past treasurer of the United Way fund, former member of the Elks Club and treasurer of the American Arthritis Association.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Anne Ricks Cheshire of the home; three daughters, Lucy C. Minter of Charlotte, N.C., Susan C. Lathrop of Alexandria and Margaret C. Ferguson of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Emily C. White of Bassett; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel, with the Rev. Landon Lindsay and Dick Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
