Isaac's place of birth, as shown above, is technically in error since West Virginia did not exist until the 1860's when it was formed from an area of western Virginia during the War Between the States. His place of birth, as shown above, correctly names the area that he was born in as it became known after West Virginia was formed.
Isaac was one of at least five children born to Jacob and Mahala (Stambaugh) Alt and was this contributors great great grandfather. Family records state that he was born and died in "Smoke Hole" in Pendleton County. Isaac was elected Captain of the Pendleton County (West Virginia) Home Guards on June 8, 1863 and commissioned Captain of the 46th Militia , Union Army, on July 1st, 1863, during the Civil War. Captain Isaac Alt's company of the Home Guards was mustered in at Brushy Run, Pendleton County, West Virginia on July 1, 1863. On December 27, 1860 in Pendleton County, Virginia (now West Virginia), Isaac married Rebecca J. (Elizabeth?) Johnson, and they became the parents of fourteen children; Emily J. Alt; Savanna Bell Alt; Charles Adam Alt; John R. Alt; Isaac Sherman Alt; Jacob Clarence Alt; Dessie G. Alt; Sallie Alt; Minnie Alt; Mary Susan (E.) Alt; Anna Lydia Alt [this contributors great grandmother]; Zachariah Filmore Alt; Mahala A. Alt and Isaac S. Alt.
Isaac died at 64 years, 1 month, and 27 days of age.
