Herbert Burns, 91, of Rio, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Divine Savior Extended Care in Portage, where he resided for the past month. Herbie was born on July 18, 1917, in Ladysmith, the son of Clarence and Bertha Woods Burns. Herbie was involved with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) from 1936-1939. He proudly served his country in World War II in the Army from 1941-1946. He survived the Bataan Death March and spent three and half years as a Prisoner of War. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and many other decorations and medals. He was united in marriage to the former Marjorie Shew on May 28, 1958. They celebrated 50 years of marriage. Herbie was self-employed in the electric motor repair business for nearly 30 years and was also a skilled automotive mechanic. He also ran a small Fix-it Shop in Pardeeville for many years. He would fix and repair people's appliances or small engines or motors, many times at no charge. His friends will long remember him for their time shared fishing, hunting and bowling. Herbie and his wife Marjorie worked as volunteers at the Rio Nutrition Center, since 1980, developing many friendships there. He was a devout member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rio. His memberships also included the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Ex-P.O.W.'s of America.
He was preceded in death by both his parents and brothers. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie of Rio; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Floyd Burns of Pardeeville, Mrs. Robert Porter of Menasha and Mrs. Roy Cutsforth of Rio; a special nephew, Russell (Nancy) Burns of Pardeeville; a special friend, Annette Engen of Elva; nieces, nephews and other near relatives and dear friends.
