Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army in Ohio. He was assigned to the Presidio of Monterey from 1907-1910 and re enlisted and assigned to the Presidio of San Francisco from 1910-1913.
Yosemite Valley Railroad and Lumber Company employed him at their Box Factory. The Southern Pacific Railroad employed him for many years as a mechanic and brakeman on the Cascade and Siskiyou Lines. He also was employed by the Northwestern Railroad.
Fred married Lottie May (McFall) Hoagland and they lived in Klamath County where six of their eight children were born. Two were born in California.
Fred and his family moved to Portland, Oregon. Four of his six sons served in the U.S. Air Force and the youngest served in the Marine Corps. His oldest son, Robert Burns, is buried right next to him.
