In his youth, he excelled in high school football and later played on the Green Bay Packers farm team before he joined the US Marine Corp in 1942. He fought in the South Pacifc and was last stationed in Okinawa when the first atom bomb was dropped. Returning home he enrolled in a culinary school under the GI Bill, until he was summoned back to California during the Korean Conflict.
