He he was appointed Second Lieutenant on July 15, 1862. During the Battle of Arkansas Post on January 11, 1863, 2nd Lt. Rice was captured along with much of his unit and sent to MP at St. Louis, Missouri.

Rice was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio on January 27, 1863, then to Fort Delaware, Delaware on April 12, 1863. He was one of the prisoners exchanged at City Point, Virginia on April 29, 1863.

Second Lieutenant Rice was relieved from command on June 10, 1863.
