The Lord said, "Well done good and faithful servant" and called home His beloved son, Matthew Joseph Weber, age 104, on Monday morning November 17, 2014 in Manistique. He passed away of natural causes with his son and daughter at his side.

He was born December 9, 1909 on the Weber homestead in Manistique Township, the fourteenth child of German immigrant pioneers Sebastian Sr. and Theresia (Schwaiger) Weber, and with his passing their family of fifteen children is now rejoined.

Matthew attended St. Francis de Sales School through the 8th grade and graduated from Manistique High School with the Class of 1928. After school, he began his working career at the Schoolcraft County Road Commission as a laborer, equipment operator, and soon bookkeeper. He worked there for 42 years, retiring in 1971 as Superintendent and Manager. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and serving five years in the European Theater, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. Matt spent the majority of his military duty in charge of the Military Supply Depot in Cardiff, Wales, from which many of the supplies to the American troops were distributed.

After World War II, he married Frances Klarich on November 3, 1951 at St. Francis de Sales Church, and they began their life together raising their family in the modest home which they built on the River Road. Frances preceded him in death on September 22, 2010 after 58 years of marriage.

Matthew is survived by a son, James J. (Barbara) Weber of Manistique; daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Eric) Schatz of Marquette; grandchildren, Angela (James) Linski of Milwaukee, Monica (Josue) Hernandez of Milwaukee, Elena Schatz of Gladstone, Kourtney (Jason) Bradley of Manistique, Kory Weber of Barberton, Ohio, Zachary Weber of Rogers City, Michigan, Millicent and Emily Weber of Manistique; great –grandchildren, Joseph and Vincent Linski, Ruby and Evie Hernandez, and Kaden and Owen Bradley; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Eve and Jack Martin of Las Vegas, and sister-in-law, Theresa Klarich of Manistique; also numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George, Sebastian Jr., Jacob, Henry, Frank; and sisters, Lena Landwehr, Anna Ekstrom Blandford, Fannie Davis, Minnie Krammin, Agnes Perry, Josephine Schnurer, Elizabeth (Sister Ethel), Martha Weber, and Grace Gonyea.

During Matt's work life, he was the driving force behind many of the gravel roads in the county being converted to pavement. He was an avid sportsman enjoying the hunting of small game, deer, and brook trout fishing to include every stream in the eastern U.P. He shot his last deer at the age of 96, and a major source of enjoyment in his retirement years was cutting the trees and building his log cabin on the Manistique River. An independent soul, he drove his pick-up truck until he voluntarily turned in his driver's license at the age of 102 without ever having a ticket. Matt was a great story teller who enjoyed his extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends and would relate to them stories from the days of the horse and buggy, the kerosene lamp, Model T's, the Great Depression and all the way to the computer age. Having an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, he stayed current right up to the end.

Matt truly was one of the last members of "the Greatest Generation", and will be forever missed by his family and all who knew him.

Visitation for Matt will be from 4:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran's memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm, and parish liturgical prayers will be said at 6:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique with Father Ben Paris officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery at Manistique, followed by a luncheon at the St. Francis de Sales Parish Center.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Francis de Sales School or Education Foundation, 210 Lake Street, Manistique, MI 49854
