SHEPARD, Nancy Kaye

Nancy Aschenbrener Shepard died November 13 in her home after a seven year struggle with cancer at the age of 66.

Nancy was born March 27, 1948 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to her parents Aloysius Joseph Aschenbrener and Elaine Louise Aschenbrener.

Her family moved to Pasadena, California when she was eight years old. Nancy made California her home thereafter. From an early age, she was heavily involved in her community, through scouting and other activities. She enrolled at UC Santa Barbara in 1966, where she obtained her BA in History and Master's Degrees in Education and in Counseling Psychology and as well as credentials in School Psychology, Psychometrics and Administration.

At UCSB, she also met her husband, Lawrence ("Lor"). They married in 1972 and moved to Davis in 1975 where Nancy worked as a school psychologist for the Davis Joint Unified School District until her retirement in 2007. Her professional interest lay in identifying students with special needs and working with their parents and school colleagues to tailor programs addressing those needs.

Unquestionably, Nancy's greatest joy was her sons, David, John, and Paul, and the two daughters David and John brought into her life, Valerie and Kristen.

For family and friends, Nancy was the ultimate provider, taking both delight and fulfillment in planning meals, holidays, and celebrations. Her hospitality was extended both in Davis and in treasured retreats she maintained on the Sonoma Coast and at Bucks Lake. She was the central mover behind family gatherings and worked hard to make her homes welcoming places for family and friends. She also loved to travel. Throughout her illness, she continued to arrange family vacations, events, and holidays. She was known for her strength, her warmth, and her commitment to her family. She was known for her service to her church and education. For most of her life in Davis, including during her illness, she served on the St. James School Board and the St. James Parish Finance Committee. During her tenure, she oversaw the construction of a number of new facilities for students. Her work in education culminated in the founding and partial funding of a special education program. Described as "pioneering" by a colleague, it has been adopted in the 43 Catholic schools in the Sacramento Diocese. She has likewise established a grant program that funds innovative programs developed by the faculty of St. James School.

Nancy is survived by her husband Lawrence, her son David and his wife Valerie, her son John and his wife Kristen, and her sisters Joan Yacovone, Carol Kobal, and Mary Aschenbrener.

She is preceded in death by her son Paul who died in 1991.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Dan Looney on Thursday, November 20, at 11:00 AM, at St. James Catholic Church, 1275 B Street in Davis. In lieu of flowers, please consider making gifts to St. James School Capital Improvements Fund, 1215 B Street, Davis, California 95616.
