Russian Admiral. In 1854 he graduated from the school of the Black Sea cadets in Nikolayev and was sent to the Black Sea Fleet, where he took part in the heroic defense of Sevastopol in the Russian-Turkish war of 1853-1856, for his bravery shown in combat awarded the insignia of the Military Order of the 4th degree (soldier St. George cross).
