Harold A. Veenstra
formerly of Hampshire
A memorial visitation for Harold A. Veenstra, 69, of Elgin, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Eulogy service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire.
Born Sept. 21, 1940, in Charlevoix, Mich., the son of the late Gerritt and Cornelia (nee Wassanaar) Veenstra, he died peacefully Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, due to complications from pneumonia.
He married Patricia L. Otterbacher on June 20, 1963. Harold was a graduate of Western Michigan University and received a J. D. from Cornell University. He also honorably served in the Navy as a radar technician.
Harold lived and raised his family in Hampshire for 40 years. He worked for many years in a managerial capacity in teh manufacturing industry, was a paramedic, and did tax and bookkeeping work. He was a proud volunteer for many years as an E. M. T. and paramedic for the Hampshire Fire & Rescue.
Harold was an avid reader who loved to tell stories, some of which were true. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with his family, friends and many pets.
He is survived by his loving spouse of 46 years, Pat; his children, Tim Veenstra of Eminence, Ky., Joe (Becky) Veenstra of LaCrosse, Wis., Dirk Veenstra of Hampshire, Anne (Mark) Harter of Elgin and Tom (Ayano) Veenstra of Shelby, N.C.; his grandchildren, Mike, Selya, Leo, Jack and Samuel; and many other family members and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family strongly requests the omission of flowers and requests memorials in his name be directed to the Hampshire Fire & Rescue Department.
