Mrs. Lemmel, Composer of Hymns, Dies

Mrs. Helen Howarth Lemmel, 97, composer of hymns and a retired voice teacher, died yesterday at her home, 16552 18th Av. N.E.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 o'clock Saturday in the Adams Forkner chapel. Cremation will follow.

Mes. Lemmel composed about 400 hymns in the past 30-odd years. Her best-known hymn, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," is sung by Protestant churches around the world. She was blind in recent years.

Mrs. Lemmel had called Seattle her home since 1904 although she traveled quite widely many years as a concert singer and children's missioner. She conducted religious services for children and wrote stories and songs for them. She also wrote poetry.

Born in Wardle, England, Mrs. Lemmel came to this country when she was 9. She lived several years in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. When a young woman, she organized a woman's quartet that traveled with the Chautauqua Circuit. She was a soprano.

Mrs. Lemmel was a member of the Ballard Baptist Church.

Survivors are
a son, Laurance H. Lemmel, Apache Junction, Ariz.,
five grandchildren,
and nine great-grandchildren.
