John Owen Geis, 72, of Julesburg, CO passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 in Julesburg. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19th, at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home at 10:30am, burial followed at the Ovid Cemetery.

John was born January 7, 1942, the eldest of six siblings to Fred Peter and Beverly (Davis) Geis in Ovid, Colorado. John lived most of his childhood in Ovid. He had also lived on a ranch in Holyoke and started elementary school at Red Feather Lake in Fort Collins. He soon moved back to Ovid where he played basketball, track, and football for the Ovid Red Devils. He was on the 1956 Bean Bowl State Championship football team. He also participated in band, chorus, drama, and Boy’s State. John graduated from Ovid High School in 1960.

John joined the Marine Corps and served for four years. Having been stationed in Camp Pendleton, Bainbridge Maryland, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he also served off the coast of Cuba during the Bay of Pigs. While stationed in Maryland, John was selected to attend the Naval Academy. After being honorably discharged in 1964, he worked on his father’s farm in Buffalo, Missouri.

In 1965 John moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance. John went back to Buffalo in 1967 to help on the farm until his father sold it later that same year. When the farm was sold he moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he managed at Davis Brothers Cafeteria. This is where he met his soul mate, Gwen Sayer, who he married in 1968. Shortly after being married they moved to Dallas, Texas, where their only child Joni Geis was born. The Family moved back to Ovid in 1970. John soon opened up his plumbing and heating company. John stayed in Sedgwick County running his business until his passing in 2014.

John enjoyed golf, fishing, reading, and playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Gwen of Julesburg, daughter Joni and husband Jeff, and two grandchildren, Samantha and Jordan Wegman of New Braunfels, Texas.
