Virginia Beach - On Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 6:15 pm, our sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Gwendolyn Walton Daniels transitioned from this life at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Daniels, her parents, Joseph and Alice Walton and her brother, Roland Walton. Gwen earned her bachelor's degree at Virginia State College and master's degree at Indiana University. After completing her undergraduate work, she married her college sweetheart, James of Norfolk. Together they forged careers in education in the Norfolk Public Schools system until their retirements. During her career, Gwen served as a classroom teacher, reading teacher, and reading specialist. She traveled extensively and spent time in various European countries. She also enjoyed spending time in St. Maarten, her favorite vacation spot, and in Columbia, Maryland with her beloved sister Alice and friends. Gwen was an active member of St. Aiden's Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, where she served on the Personnel Committee. She was active in the Norfolk Chapter of the Virginia State University Alumni Association, and worked tirelessly to raise scholarship funds for incoming college freshmen. She was a 50 year plus Life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and served on numerous committees for the sorority. She was also member of the Maryland Nubian Circle.Gwen was an avid bridge player and played regularly with various groups.Gwen is survived by her siblings, Joseph Walton of Virginia Beach, Alice Haskins (Augustus) of Columbia, MD, Marie McDowell (Charles) of Virginia Beach, Wanser Turner (Alsandro) of Columbia, MD, William "Lin" Walton (Jane) of San Diego, CA, and Faith McKeithen (Bertram) of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.A Celebration of Gwen's wonderful life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 11:00 am at St. Aiden's Episcopal Church, 3201 Edinburgh Drive, Virginia Beach. A ceremony by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will be held at the church during the family hour at 10:30 am. Inurnment will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens mausoleum following a reception at the church.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund of the Norfolk Alumni Chapter of Virginia State University. Arrangements entrusted to Walton Funeral Home.
