Stephen S. Shanks, 56, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Villa Grove, died Saturday (Nov. 15, 2014) at home.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at the Joines Funeral Home, Illinois 130 South, Villa Grove. Pastors Sandy Hires and Duane Piercy will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at the funeral home.

Steve was born on Feb. 13, 1958, in Chicago to Sidney and Martha (Ehrie) Shanks.

He is survived by both parents and his two sons, whom he was very proud of: Nicklaus Shanks (fiancee Denise) of Bement, who is a partner in Advanced Crop Services and is also a precision ag specialist with Farm Pride, and Andrew (Adri) Shanks of Manhattan, Kan., who is a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Riley. Also surviving are two brothers, Michael (Cathy) of Longview and Mark (Melissa) of Shelbyville; and two sisters, Marcia (Dennis) Riggs of Broadlands and Sharon (Dave) Jackson of Hindsboro.

He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by an infant niece, Cydney Shanks. Other very special people in his life were his stepchildren, Lance, Lucas and Lindsey Burnam of Champaign, and his many friends.

Steve attended Villa Grove High School, where he was a popular student and athlete. He also attended Parkland College and later enjoyed whatever he did for work, whether it was teaching golf, working in his parents' pizza business, working as a sales representative for restaurant supply companies or as a trainer for the Olive Garden. Steve loved any job that connected him with people.

He also loved the Gulf Coast and the beach and spent much of the past 20 years in Biloxi and the St. Petersburg area, where he enjoyed walking on the beach and spending time with his many friends. He was an avid sports fan who loved following his favorite teams - the Cardinals, the Bears and the Fighting Illini basketball and football teams.

Steve loved children and was looking forward with great joy to the birth of his first grandchildren in the spring of 2015.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Villa Grove Sports Booster Club.
