Constance J. "Connie" Mitchell, 72, Altoona, fought a courageous battle against cancer but in the end succumbed to the illness on Wednesday.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Costantino and Theresa (Grieco) Colabove. She was twice married, first to Francis "Larry" Sobak, who passed away in 1983. She then married James L. Mitchell, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters: Laura Gregory and husband, Paul, and their children, Jamie Biondi (Brad) and Matthew and Corey Boone, and Lisa Durbin and husband, Scott, and their children, Elena and Angela Durbin; and three stepchildren: Monica Lynn Girardo and husband, Olivio, and their daughter, Marla Jean, Dr. James L. Mitchell III and Beth Ann Mitchell.

Connie is also survived by three sisters: Livia Kleiner, Gloria Gehringer (William) and Judy Humphreys (Michael); a brother, Raymond Colabove (Connie); and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Thomas Kleiner.

Connie was a 1960 graduate of Altoona High School. She enjoyed being able to stay at home to raise her children when they were young. She later held various clerical jobs for the CIA, Travelers Insurance Co. and most recently Sears. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and Jaggard First United Methodist Church.

Connie also enjoyed cooking, baking and celebrating family traditions. She was a big fan of the Denver Broncos, the tranquility of fishing and a good movie.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Committal will be at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
