Olympic Champion. The most successful athlete of the 1896 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He won the gold medal in individual horse vault and as a member of the German gymnastics team he won gold medals in the horizontal bar and parallel bars team competitions. He surprised everyone when he won the Greco-Roman wrestling competitions against the Greek Georgios Tsitas, who was 15 cm (6 inch) taller than Schuhmann. He also attended the weightlifting event (fourth place) as well as the long jump (seventh place), triple jump and shot put but without the same success.
