HUGH STILLWAGON DIES SUDDENLY
Found Lifeless in Pool of Water at Ligonier Early This Morning
WAS STRICKEN WITH PARALYSIS
Only Went to Marietta Plant Yesterday as Mine Foreman - An Old Resident of Connellsville and Prominent In Politics Years Ago
Hugh Stillwagon, aged about 60 years, a life long resident of Connellsville, was found dead in a pool of water at Legonier at an early hour this morning after a party that had been searching for him all night. Stillwagon went to the Marietta plant of the Marietta Connellsville Coke Company only yesterday as mine foreman. He complained of feeling ill, but was about the plant all day. The supposition is that he was stricken with paralysis on his way from the mine to his boarding house, about a quarter mile away, stumbled into the pool of water and drowned.
The owners of the plant, Rockwell Marietta, Clair Stillwagon and W. L. Kelly, were at the mine yesterday leaving about 3 o’clock for home. They told Stillwagon to take things easy until he got strong and left him in good spirit, but complaining of being weak. When he did not come to his boarding house between 6 and 7 o'clock a search was made for him. The supposition was that he had gone to Ligonier, but no trace of him could be found. The night was dark and the searches did not come upon the body until daylight this morning when it was found in an 18 inch pool of water along a path half way between the mine and Stillwagon's boarding house. There was no signs of violence on the body.
Hugh Stillwagon was widely known in Connellsville and Fayette County. He was an ardent Democrat, held office a number of times in Connellsville and a member of Council and the Board of Health and a number of years was the Democratic nominee for county commissioner. About 20 years ago his services were eagerly sought at political meetings throughout the county as a stump speaker.
Deceased is survived by his widow and four children, Mrs. Ella Johnson of New Salem; R.E. Stillwagon of Connellsville, Lloyd of Ohiopyle, and Bella at home. The arrangements for the funeral had not been arranged up to noon today.
