Michael the son of Joseph A. Cooper and Eula T. Cooper of Chesapeake Wes Virginia enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 9 1967 in Ashland KY. He arrived in Vietnam on February 16 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of August the Battalion continued to patrol the "Rocket Belt" and area of their responsibility that surrounded the Da Nang Military Complex in Quang Nam Province. On August 23 during an ongoing joint operation with the 51st ARVN Regiment in the vicinity of the Qua Giang village complex and the Cam Le Bridge the Marines engaged the enemy in a battle. During the fire fight LCpl was killed in action from a hostile explosive device.
