Clarence Martin Van Zee was born on December 20, 1921 to Andrew E. and Trynie (De Wild) Van Zee. He grew up in the Pella area and received his education at the Valley Country School.

On November 22, 1944 Clarence was united in marriage with Loretta Mae Boat at the Otley Reformed Church parsonage. To this union their daughter Andrea was born.

He served his country in the Navy during World War II.

Clarence, along with his brother Lester, owned and operated the Van Zee Pump and Plumbing Service for many years. Later Clarence owned and operated the Culligan Water Conditioning franchise in Pella. After that he delivered tires for Ray Klyn for several years. Later Clarence and Loretta organized and led senior citizen bus tours across the U.S. and Canada. They enjoyed taking their grandchildren, Clarice and Greg, along with them on their trips. Clarence and Loretta retired in 1986.

Clarence was a long-time member of the Otley Reformed Church where he served on consistory, RCYF leader, taught Sunday School, and operated the sound system in church for more than twenty years. Clarence was also a long-time member of the American Legion.

Clarence went to be with his Lord on Thursday evening, January 10, 2008 at the Pella Hospice Comfort House at the age of eighty-six years and twenty-one days.

Those left to cherish is memory are his wife, Loretta their daughter Andrea Beekhuizen and her husband, Gary of Des Moines, two grandchildren: Clarice Meinders and her husband, Glenn of Pella, and Greg Beekhuizen of Bradenton, Florida. Clarence also leaves his brother Lester Van Zee and his wife Gertrude of Pella, his sister Lucille Van Wyk and her husband Ralph of Pella and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
