Major League Baseball Player. Born in Yorkshire, England, the 5-foot-9, 155-pound switch-hitting outfielder had a single in 10 at-bats during his brief stint with the Boston Red Sox in 1908. But he was involved in one of the most unusual plays in pro baseball history. He pulled off an unassisted triple play while playing center field for Vernon, California, of the Pacific Coast League on July 19, 1911. The Los Angeles Angels had Charles Moore on second and George Metzger on first with walks in a tie game in the sixth inning. Roy Akin hit reliever Harry Stewart's first pitch for what appeared to be a hit to center. Carlisle made a tumbling catch and dashed to second to double up Moore, who was well on his way to the plate. He then completed the triple play by trotting to first before Metzger could return. The outfielder later received a diamond-studded gold pin from the fans for his feat. No major-league outfielder has ever turned the trick. Four times he led the PCL in runs scored with 113 in 179 games with Los Angeles in 1907; 134 in 224 games with Vernon in 1910; 181 in 206 games with Vernon in 1911; and 177 in 200 games with Vernon in 1912. He stole 76 bases in 1912 and had 449 steals during his 19-year minor-league career.
