Mr. Bokhoven died Sunday evening, Jan. 21, 2001 from acute leukemia. He had been diagnosed with the disease in November 2000.

He was born Sept. 26, 1923 near Taintor, Iowa. He was the sixth of 10 children that were born to Harmanus W. and Antonia C. Verploegh Bokhoven. Art attended country grade schools. On Oct. 4, 1945 he married Freda Fern Pothoven. The couple had two daughters, Karen Joy and Darlene Gail. They were living at Sully, Iowa when Freda died August 4, 1953 at the age of 28 years due to infectious hepatitis. Art was left with his two young daughters and then made his home with her parents, John and Goldie (Tysseling) Pothoven. He and his two daughters were enroute to their rural home when they were involved in a tragic auto accident south of Sully in Mahaska County Nov. 8, 1953. Art's youngest daughter Darlene died from her injuries received in this accident at the age of two. Art and his daughter Karen recovered from their serious injuries and then moved into Pella, Iowa in the summer of 1954 where they made their residence with his parents. Art then began working at Brom Hatchery and later for Bakker and Rus Feeds in Pella. On May 28, 1959 he married Phyllis Jean (Veenendahl) Lauterbach at Pella, who was a daughter of Marion and Sarah Veenendahl. They had three children, Jeffrey Dean, Kelvin Eugene and Lisa Mae. Following their marriage, Art and Phyllis built their home just west of Pella. Art continued in the feed business the remainder of his lifetime. Fifteen years ago, at the age of 62 years, he developed his own pig feed formula which he was still delivering at the time of his last illness. He operated his business under the name, Swine Consultant Services. Art maintained an active interest in his business and thoroughly enjoyed the swine industry.

Art made profession of his faith at and was a member of the Peoria Christian Reformed Church in Peoria, Iowa until he moved to Pella. He then became a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he was a faithful member at the time of his death. He had served as a board member for Pella Christian Grade School and was a member of the Iowa Pork Association. For 20 years, Art served as the "Town Crier" during Pella's Annual Tulip Time, a position he currently held. His family remembers him for his love and devotion for them; the enjoyment he found in raising pigs; and the pleasure he found in growing flowers.
