The new year 2023 has brought me the ship's log for the "Nevada" sailed 11 April 1883 where it states that,
"John McMurtrie left the ship after we had remitted for New York."

No doubt the stories are true that John couldn't bare to leave as he was still mourning the death of his wife, Janet, whom died 1882. Ship sailed without John in 1883. John died 1884.

The story states that John's body was found laying across the grave of his beloved Janet.

Luckily, that my 2nd GG Uncle, Robert Enoch Gray #60536 was aboard. As Robert took charge and helped the children to America. In the process, Robert fell in love with John and Janet's daughter, Marion Dunn McMurtrie* #60534.
Robert Enoch Gray was a widower. His wife Helen McAllister had died 1879. Robert was aboard with his daughter (s).
Robert and Marion later married in 1887 in St. George, Utah. Along with raising the McMurtrie children they had five known children of their own. Robert died in 1918 and Marion died in 1949.
