William Wellington Gavitt, deceased

William W. Gavitt was born in Delaware County, Ohio, in Feb. 1840, and died in Topeka Jan. 11, 1922. He was the son of Rev. Ezekiel Stanton and Elizabeth (Miller) Gavitt and was descended of pre-Revolutionary stock.

He was married June 23, 1873, to Jennie Ledie Spangle, born in Warsaw, Ind. June 15, 1853. She died in Topeka, Feb. 4, 1899.

Mr. & Mrs. Gavitt were parents of two sons: Harry E. and Corrington S., and a daughter, Elizabeth Gavitt Brunt, deceased.

Mr. Gavitt graduated from Wesleyan Univ. in 1862. In 1868 he moved to Topeka and established the banking and loan business of W. W. Gavitt & Co., Bankers and Brokers. About the same time he joined others in forming a company to open the Osage Co. coal mines. He joined others to organize a company which built and owned the original Grand Opera House on Jackson St., and one of the first creameries in Shawnee Co. He also organized the Brush Electric Light Co. on Jackson between 7th and 8th Ave.

He belonged the the Elks Club, the Commercial Club and the Kansas Bankers Ass'n.
