Mr. Phillips was born November 8, 1934 in Joaquin, TX to Summer Phil and Bertha Ester Laughlin Phillips.
Bill and his father-in-law, Red Chambers, started Chambers and Phillips Water Well Drilling in 1957. He retired in 1990 and sold the business to his son, Billy, and nephew, Richard Butcher. Chambers and Phillips continues to be operated by its third generation of family members. His daughter Cathryn has served as secretary for the business for 29 years. Bill loved fishing, gardening, cooking, canning and watching Western shows. Bill was a people person and enjoyed telling jokes and sharing stories. He was a "jack of all trades" and enjoyed passing his knowledge on to others. Bill was a Baptist by faith.
Surviving are his son and his wife, William "Billy" and Elaine Phillips of Martins Mill; 2 daughters and their husbands: Cathryn and Benney McMullen of Ben Wheeler and Carolyn and Craig Kelly of Canton; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers and their wives: Phil and Jackie Phillips of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Jerry and Elizabeth Phillips of Athens.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Phillips, his parents and a brother, Preston Day Melton.
Pallbearers are Brandon Towles, Clint Phillips, Jason Phillips, Preston McMullen, Robert Ballard, Jeremy Kelly, Doug Walker, Triston McMullen, Jason Forrest and Todd Towles. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Taylor, Wayne Jeter, C.H. Doty, Ed Randolph, Duane Musgrave and Bob Stafford.
