Marshall Crawford was born in Kentucky in about 1803, He married Rebecca Sinclair who was born in Tennessee about 1805. He migrated to Arkansas Territory about 1825, settling on the Arkansas River in an area they called Lovely County.

About 1828, the Crawfords were among several hundred families removed from Lovely county when the area was ceded back to the Cherokee Indians. In return, Marshall received a 320-acre land grant from the federal government. He moved his family to Crawford County, Arkansas, where he farmed and raised cattle.

Crawford came to Texas in 1843 and located his farm on the headwaters of the Sabine River in present day Hopkins and Rains County. Crawford was a Mercer Colonist. He is listed as the 13th colonist in the Mercer Colony, with a date of introduction of February 23, 1944.

In October 1854, Crawford settled in Bell County, Texas. He died April 17, 1879, and is buried in the Eulogy Cemetery near Temple. Rebecca died November 19, 1882.
Marshall is buried nex to his son Thomas Benton Crawford.

Marshal Crawford had nine children. Mary married H. Williams. Louis married T.T. Havens. Harriett married Thomas Deaton, who served as an early sheriff of both Comanche and Hamilton Counties. Thomas Benton Crawford married Frances Ann Dickson and they had a number of children. Martha married E. Allen. Amanda married Thomas Deaton's brother, John Calvin Deaton. Elizabeth married J.A.Clark. Charles Sinclair Crawford served in the Confederate Arym from Bell County and became a prominent Bell County farmer. Descendants of Marshal Crawford are members of the sons of the Republic of Texas.
