William Noakes was born 23 October 1818 at Laughton, Sussex, England. He was the fifth child and fourth son of the Thomas and Emma Inkpen Noakes family. At the age of twelve he accompanied his parents and siblings across the Atlantic Ocean emigrating from the British Isles to North America. They arrived at New York 7 June 1830 on Ship "Robert Zaur". He lived at Litchfield , Medina, Ohio, USA from 1830 to 1842.
