THOMAS H. WHITE

Thomas Horton White was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, January 23, 1830 to George Washington (15 Mar 1795-27 Jan 1872) and Catherine (Horton) White (26 Jun 1798-03 May 1867). A year later his parents moved to Bedfrd County, Pennsylvania, where he was brought up on a farm and remained there until the fall of 1853, then he started west after spending some time in Illinois and Iowa finally landed in Kansas. In May, 1855, he took a claim of 160 acres on the Neosho river north of the present city of Emporia, Kansas. After improving said claim and living on it four years he sold it and bought an uninproved farm of 160 acres situated three miles southeast of Americus, Kansas. Here he has lived ever since and has made extencive improvements. He has added by purchase another 160 acres on Allen Creek. In 1881 he bought a cattle range of 600 acres in Chase County, Kansas. Mr. White served in the state milita during the Price raid and the various Indian scares. He is one of the oldest settlers in Lyon County and it is said that he has not stayed over night out of the county half a dozen times. He moved to Americus a few years ago and has built him a fine residence and has now retired ftom active buisness dto take life easy the rest of his days.
