Four Killed In Fiery Accident

Four southern Chester County residents were killed yesterday afternoon when their pickup truck hit a tree near Avondale and burst into flames.

Richard W. Riddle, 23, the driver, Sharon McDonough, 17, and Judds Myers, 20, all from the Wet Grove area, and Walter C. Hendrickson, 23, of Kemblesville, were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Dr. Hunter Addis.

State police at Avondale said the four were driving traveling rapidly south on Avondale-New London Road at 4:40 p.m. when the truck ran off the right edge of the road in a left turn in London Grove Township about a quarter mile south of Avondale.

The truck hit a tree, according to police, then burst into flames. All the occupants were pined inside the cab. Police said the bodies were extracted by Southern Chester County Rescue Association and members of the Avondale Fire Co.

Sharon McDonough, 17, was born in Wilmington, Del., the daughter of Bernard J. and Beverly Gentry McDonough. She was a senior at Avon Grove high School.

Besides her parents, is survived by a brother, Bernard J Jr., of Avondale; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Coy Gentry of West Grove and her paternal grandfather, Joseph H. McDonough of Kennett Square.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Richard W. Riddle, 23, of Town View Rd., West Grove, as born in Miami, Fla., son of J. Isaac Riddle, Atlanta, Ga., and Lois Wallace Riddle Smith, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. He was employed as a truck driver by W. J. Hampton, West Grove. He had attended Avon Grove High School.

Surviving besides his parents are one brother, James Theodore Riddle, Jacksonville, Fla., and two sisters, Lori Ann Smith and Karen Smith, both of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

His maternal grandparents, William (Dick) and Alice Reyburn Wallace, West Grove, with whom he lived for many years, also survive.

Funeral service plans have not been finalized.
