Virginia Jones Harper, 86, of Lenoir passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.
Mrs. Harper was born in Caldwell County to the late William Jones and Hazel Witherspoon Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Henry Paul Jones, Bennett Jones, Billy Jones and Leroy Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. In her later years, she attended St. Paul AME Church with her husband. She loved attending Sunday school and had a special ministry of sending cards of encouragement to people that she often prayed for and thought about.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years Preston Harper, Sr.; her sons, Preston Harper, Jr. of Charlotte, Matthew Harper and wife Barbara of Mt. Holly, and Jeffery Harper and wife Helen of Fort Worth, TX; her daughter, Ginny Harper of Charlotte; her sisters, Mozelle Horton of Lenoir and Louise Whittington of Virginia Beach, VA; her grandchildren, Andre Harper, Carolyn Harper, Zachariah Harper, Ginger Harper, Matthew Harper, Jr. and Christian Harper; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 14, 2014 at St. Paul AME Church at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Byron Grayson Sr. and Reverend Jimmie Norwood officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Andre Harper, Zachariah Harper, Billy Alexander Jones, Jr., Leroy Jones, Jr., Don Alston and James Isaac Alston.
