Mrs. Johnson Pioneer Here, Passes Away
Came To Santa Clara Valley Nearly Fifty Years Ago and Lived Here Since; Funeral Sunday
Mrs. A.M. Johnson more familiarly known as Mrs. Minnie Johnson wife of the late Charles Johnson passed away at her home on C street. The Grim Reaper came at 4:30 p.m. She was stricken early Wednesday morning and did not seem to gain full consciousness again till the end. While she came to recognize those who came to her bedside she could only speak a few words. Death came as she had often wished it might, with no lingering illness that would keep her from the active duties of life.

Mrs. Johnson was one of the oldest settlers of the valley and one of the best known and loved, for her life has been one of supremely unselfish service to any and all who needed her help. Untiringly active in her work in her church and Sunday school as well as in the Red Cross and other forms of charity she has left the records of a beautiful life.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Nevada county, California, November 5, 1844 and came with her parents to Santa Clara valley, in 1873. She taught school at Saticoy and in the country near Oxnard. She was married to Charles H. Johnson, November 24, 1881. She had four boys, two of whom met a tragic death in infancy when Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were trying to ford the Santa Clara river where the Montalvo bridge now stands. They with their two children, together with the horse and buggy, went down in the flood waters and the children were lost. Her sorrow only made her the more of a ministering angel to others in grief.

She was an active member of the Methodist church, and the local church will not soon forget her for the impress of her life and work found everywhere.

She leaves two sons, Elmer and Lawrence Johnson, prosperous farmers of the valley; one brother R. B. Alexander of Downey, and for sisters, Mrs. W.G. Cline of Los Angeles, Mrs. J.H. Conrad of Camarillo, Mrs. C.L. Thompson of San Luis Obispo, and Mrs. W. M. Rogers of Berkeley.

Her two sons and their family and Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Cline were with her at the end.

Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30., Rev. M.A. Wimberley her pastor officiating.
A friend contributes the following eulogy in verse:
"On the black velvet covering her eyes
Let the dull earth be thrown;
Her's is the mightier silent of the skies,
And long quiet rest alone.
Over the pure, dark, wistful eyes of her.
Over all the human, all that dies of her,
Gently let flowers be strown."
