Staff Sgt. Abraham G. Twitchell of Yelm, Washington enlisted in the Marines while still attending Yelm High School on Oct. 25, 1995 and went off to boot camp after graduating in 1996. He was an armorer, customizing handguns and rifles for soldiers in Iraq. His middle name came from his grandfather, Maurice George Twitchell, a soldier who died in World War II. Maurice also left behind three children, including Abraham's father, who had not been born yet. He once stated, he could die just as easily being hit by a drunken driver. If he died young, he would die as a Marine. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, three Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He leaves behind a wife, Stephanie, and their three children, sons Zachary and Zane and daughter Makenzy, three sisters and two brothers and his mother, Mary Anne Ross. Abraham died at age 28 when the seven-ton truck he was riding in rolled over in a flash flood near Al Asad, Iraq. He is the 86th service member from the Twentynine Palms base to die in the Iraq war.
