Elmer Chickering, a leading Boston photographer died there, May 14 last. He made a specialty of photographing people in public life. Born in 1857 at Brandon, Vt. he went to Boston, and opened a studio, thirty years ago. He leaves a widow.
He was Boston's premiere portrait photographer during the Gilded Age. He also, for a time in the late 1880's, reproduced works of art in the form of live nude models. Many of the models were from upper class Boston families and believed that recreating classic nudes showed the high level of culture they sought to attain. Chickering was brought to trial but doesn't appear to have been indicted and the nude photo's had no negative effects on his business.

Ida appears in the 1880 Census for Boston with her parents, Charles age 43 and Marie Louise Richards age 34. Ida is 23 and working as as a saleswoman in a dry good store. Her father was a physician.

Although the marriage and census records show that Elmer was married to Ida May Richards, I've found other sites that say he was married to a Mrs. R. M. Wilson and it isn't clear if she was divorced or widowed. Chickering employed a Mr. R.M. Wilson in his studio as chief poser. (Source: Wilson's Photographic Magazine, v. 30 1893, page 187)
