Lady Lavinia was the daughter of Sir Charles Robert Spencer, 6th Earl Spencer and Hon. Margaret Baring. She married Major Luke Henry White, 4th Baron Annaly of Annaly and Rathcline on April 9, 1919. To this union two children were born; Hon Elizabeth Patricia White born 1923 and Luke Robert White, 5th Baron Annaly of Annaly and Rathcline born 1927 and died 1990.

Lady Lavinia grew up at Althorp. She was five foot five, slim, with big blue eyes, and very good legs. She was full of spirit and not afraid to express her strongly held views with great candor. She loved reading, particularly the classics and Kipling and she played the violin and loved to hunt. Lady Lavinia was close friends with the Queen Mother and part of the group of high-spirited society girls who called themselves the "Mad Hatters".

Lady Elizabeth, the future Queen Mother, was a bridesmaid to Lady Annaly. After her marriage she was known as Lady White and Lady Annaly. Lady Annaly held office of Extra Bedchamber to HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
