Robert E. "Bob" Jones, 86, of Centralia, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Centralia Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Ashley, the son of George and Bessie (McKenzie) Jones.

He married Nadine Jenkins April 8, 1951, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She preceded him in death Dec. 24, 1976. He married Nancy McNew Beguelin on Oct. 15, 1977 in Irvington. She survives him living in Centralia.

In addition to his wife of 37 years, Mr. Jones is survived by a son, Bradley Kent Jones and wife, Mary Stedelin Jones of Centralia; a daughter-in-law, Rita Jones of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; one stepdaughter, Dawn Brown and husband, Patrick of Phoenix, Arizona; two stepsons, Dr. Adam L. Beguelin and wife, Loan, of San Carlos, California, and Chad E. Beguelin and partner, Tom Sleeman of New York City, New York; grandsons, Jason Jones and wife, Ruth; Zach Jones; and Greg Jones; granddaughter, Megan Jones; a great-grandson, Ty Jones; three step-granddaughters, Jade Beguelin, Julia and Audra Brown; two step-grandsons, Jared Beguelin and Louis Brown. He is also survived by many wonderful nephews and nieces.

In addition to his first wife, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Bruce Allen Jones and Gregory Scott Jones; and a sister, Betty (Jones) Markwardt; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Markwardt.

Mr. Jones served Centralia High School as a social science teacher and head boys basketball coach from 1962 - 1972 and the school's athletic director from 1972-1983.

He graduated from Arkansas State College with a bachelor of science in education in 1951.

Following graduation, he enrolled and served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War until 1953. He then taught and coached at McLeansboro, Norris City and Metropolis high schools prior to starting at Centralia. Bob earned his masters in education degree form the University of Illinois in 1956. Bob was a founding member of the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Association. In 1973, he and his 1963 and 1964 Orphan teams were inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame and he was later inducted as a coach with his 1963 and 1964 teams in Centralia's Sports Hall of Fame.

Bob was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elks and American Legion, all in Centralia.

He enjoyed spending his winters with Nancy in Harlingen, Texas; and playing golf.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in First United Presbyterian Church in Centralia. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Dr. Ed Evans officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 446 and VFW Post 2055. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.
