Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Promised Land Baptist Church in Tuckasegee. Burial was in Promised Land Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Anzel and Mary Mathis; one brother, Willie Oliver Mathis; and three sisters, Lue Ella Mathis, Oma Lee Nicholson and Betty Lee Burrell.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Rebecca Mathis; two daughters, Pamela Lark of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Sandra White of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sons, Alex Mathis of the home and Eddie Mathis of Cullowhee; three sisters, Dicie Norris and Jessie Mae Cochran of Sylva and Lois Harris of Castlerock, Wash.; five brothers, Junior Mathis of Toledo,Wash., L.H. Mathis, J.B. Mathis and Herman Mathis, all of Tuckasegee, and Willis Mathis of Longview, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
