Actress. Primarily a stage actress, her fifty year career included forty Broadway plays, twenty-one movies and eleven television appearances. She directed her first Broadway play in 1905 and appeared in "Cashel Byron" on January 9, 1906. She is best remembered for her roles in "The Thirteenth Chair" (1916) and "Tobacco Road" which ran from December 4, 1933 through May 31, 1941. Her last Broadway appearance was in "Dear Judas" in October, 1947. Her film debut was the silent movie "Fight" which was released in 1915. Her second movie was the film adaptation of the play "The Thirteenth Chair" in 1929. She was nominated Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Sergeant York" (1941); other movies include "The Yearling" (1946); "Forever Amber" (1947); and "White Heat" (1949). Her last movies, released in 1953, were "The Man from Tangier" and "The President's Lady." Her television debut was in "Fairly Won" (1949); her last performance was in "O, Lonely Moon" in 1955.
